Research & essays
We investigate ideas across philosophy, science, society, education, knowledge and technology — and publish what is useful enough to share.
EN A short introduction
KopKen is a Belgian non-profit association exploring what people should still understand, practise, question and pass on as society and technology change.
KopKen is interested in knowledge in the broadest sense: language and education, craft and practical know-how, science and philosophy, professional judgement, local memory, technology and the ways people learn from one another.
We bring together children, makers, teachers, researchers, professionals, organisations and curious minds around questions worth exploring — especially when the obvious answer may be too simple.
KopKen is part research space, part workshop and part meeting place. We do not force every idea into the same format.
We investigate ideas across philosophy, science, society, education, knowledge and technology — and publish what is useful enough to share.
We turn questions into small experiments, educational formats and practical tests, including work with children as active co-researchers.
We bring together people, disciplines and organisations that may have something to teach one another — including around half-formed ideas.
Some questions eventually need a repeatable method or tool. When that adds value, we help develop one. Many good questions never need to become a framework.
Sometimes we develop an idea ourselves. Sometimes we help someone else take it further. Sometimes the most useful outcome is simply a better question.
We use paradoxes, thought experiments and difficult questions as thinking tools: ways to expose assumptions about knowledge, trust, expertise, identity and progress — and to notice when two sensible ideas collide. Not every question below is a philosophical paradox, and we do not pretend it is.
Agreement can look like evidence. But systems may share the same sources, assumptions or errors. Consensus and reliability are not the same thing.
A copy may reproduce the answer while losing history, authority, context or lived judgement. The result can be identical while the knowledge behind it is not.
Sometimes delegation is progress. Sometimes it slowly removes our ability to check, understand, improvise or recover when the system is unavailable or wrong.
Artisanal Intelligence is one of the foundational ideas behind KopKen’s work. It asks what happens to human knowledge when machines become increasingly capable — and what we deliberately want people to remain able to understand, judge, make, explain and recover.
It is not an argument against artificial intelligence. It is an argument for remaining capable alongside it.
Keep enough understanding to question an answer, not merely receive it.
Preserve context, exceptions and professional judgement that rules cannot fully capture.
Value knowledge held in hands, routines, practice and lived experience.
Remain able to continue when a person, supplier, system or AI tool changes or disappears.
A paradox, essay or research track can remain valuable on its own. KopKen does not require every line of thought to produce a tool.
See how we question →Ideas may turn into school experiments, public conversations, learning material, local projects or collaborations with people who want to test them.
See what we do →ArtiProof is one example of what can grow from this way of thinking: an independent knowledge-assurance methodology that helps organisations identify the knowledge important work depends on, examine the evidence behind it, and decide whether it is sufficiently dependable for the intended use and consequences.
Explore ArtiProof.org ↗ArtiProof is one related line of work, not the destination of KopKen. Artisanal Intelligence is part of its intellectual background, while KopKen remains deliberately broader: education, language, practical knowledge, philosophy, social questions, experiments and ideas that may never need a formal method.
Explore sources connected to our essays, paradoxes and thought experiments. Our reading notes explain why each source is worth reading and where its limits lie.
The notes are in English; original publications remain in their available languages. Inclusion is not a seal of approval.
“Ideas can travel without every word having to.”
Because language is part of the knowledge we care about. KopKen is rooted in Dutch, with its expressions, humour, stories and local context — including the meanings hidden in the name KopKen.
This international overview gives you the essentials. We translate the texts that define us, including our Open Manifesto. The rest is an invitation to cross the language boundary.
We are interested in people who want to think, research, teach, make, test, question or share something with us.
It does not need to be finished before it is worth discussing.
Research is one strand of KopKen’s work, alongside talks, learning materials and community activities. We develop questions about knowledge, judgement and AI. Not every activity is scientific research. Source exploration, our synthesis, study design, internal checks and recorded research findings have different roles.
ArtiProof is our distinct method and research programme. Its current method and research status is maintained on ArtiProof.org. The first independent replication and broad independent validation have not been established. The K-point walkthrough used constructed input and is not a participant study.
KopKen is completing the documentation of its research, funding, interests and rights. This website does not declare that the association already meets every condition of a particular research or funding scheme. Our developing research activities sit within the broader mission of making knowledge and practical skills accessible to everyone.
